 WHAT IF?

PAST FORMULA 1 SEASONS REVISED UNDER THE NEW POINTS REGIME - WHAT WOULD CHANGE, IF ANYTHING?

1964 SEASON REVISED UNDER THE NEW POINTS SYSTEM
By Carlos De Paula

I kind of suspected, without even checking the results, that the 1964 champion would have been somebody else besides John Surtees, if the new points system were applied. And sure enough, although by not much a wide margin, Graham Hill would have beaten Surtees by two points.

Surtees was champion on the basis of his best six results, thus, two wins, three second places and one third place. These were all the instances ion which he scored during the year. Hill’s six best results, on the other hand, were two wins, three second places and one fourth place. The one point difference gave Surtees the championship.

However, Hill finished on the points seven times, also finishing once in 5th place. This gave him the 3 point edge under the new system.

The only other notable change would be Ginther jumping eight points ahead of Bandini. The  two had tied under regular scoring, however, Ginther finished a few times in 8th or seventh, in addition to scoring a whopping nine out of ten times.

This year would not produce any new scorers, had the new points system being adopted.
