(c) 'Who is Who' by Steve Small, 2000

Ashley was a fairly successful driver in the lower categories, especially in Formula 5000, where he won races and shone. Life was indeed different in F-1, although it must be said that Ashley never had a decent opportunity. In fact, his first attempt was with the poorly financed Token concern, in 1974, and to his credit he qualified at the Nurburging, finishing 14th. He also started in Austria, but was not classified having run too few laps. He got a theoretically more competitive mount, in the form of one of the myriad privateer Brabham BT42’s that graced the tracks in 1974. This gig resulted in two DNQ’s, though. He had a single 1975 chance, driving for Williams in Germany. He qualified relatively well (20th) but did not race, sustaining leg injuries from a practice accident. He was back in 1976, driving the hopeless Stanley BRM, in what turned out to be the team’s single event of the year. He qualified next to last, and an oil pump failure meant retirement. His last F-1 involvement took place in 1977, driving for Hesketh. He was entered five times, but qualified only once. He should have started the Canadian race, but had another nasty accident that put him out of action for a while. He eventually changed the tracks for the air, becoming a pilot, making sporadic appearances in the BTCC and even in Indy Lights.
