(c) 'Who is Who' by Steve Small, 2000

Julian Bailey's Formula 1 career was rather undistinguished, although he did manage to score a point with a 6th place in Imola, driving a Lotus in 1991. Julian had a full season driving for Tyrrel, in 1988, more often than not failing to qualify. His best result that season was 9th, in Long Beach.

In the lower categories Julian, like myriad other drivers, was quick. As he went beyond the Formula Ford level, things became more difficult in Formula 3. Even so, he made it to F3000, managing to win at Brands Hatch in 1987. This no doubt convinced Ken Tyrrel to give the lad a seat for 1988, but qualifying amongst 31 candidates was difficult enough for Julian.

After the unsuccessful season, Bailey was hired by Nissan, where he impressed late in 1990. Thus, he was called to driver for Lotus, which sacked him after Monaco, rather believing the Hakkinen/Herbert duo would serve the team better.

Eventually, Bailey drove tintops, driving in BTCC for a few seasons.
