SOON A FULL F-1 BIOGRAPHY OF:

BARBAZZA, FABRIZIO

Points: 2

Poles: 0

Fastest Laps: 0

Born 4/2/1963, Monza

(c) 'Who is Who' by Steve Small, 2000

Wild haired Barbazza was born in Monza, so maybe it was his destiny to became a racing driver. He was one of many fast, but over enthusiastic Italian formula 3 drivers of the eighties, who became a bit o a pioneer when he crossed the ocean to join the American Racing Series in 1986, which eventually became Indy Lights. And he won the thing too!

He then embarked on a full season of Indy Car racing, managing a wonderful third place at Indy in 1987, plus Rookie of the Year honors.

However, in the mid 80's no European driver 'dreamed" of having success in the U.S.: Formula 1 was the universal objective of seemingly all European drivers, so Fabrizzio came back to Europe, stepping down to F3000. He impressed enough to get the call from AGS, for the 1991 season.

The trouble was, AGS was a very tiny team, and 34 cars were competing for a place under the sun in 1991. So Fabbrizzio never came close to qualifying.

He did arrange enough sponsorship to rent a drive at Minardi, for 1993. Those were the Faenza team's best times, helped by the fact that the number of entrants had diminished greatly. So Barbazza qualified everywhere and managed the feat of scoring two back to back 6th places for the little team, thus scoring two points. Unfortunately the funding was not for the whole season, and Fab was dropped before the end of the year.

Eventually he made it back to the USA, to drive sports cars, and was seriously injured in a accident at Road Atlanta.
