BELSO, TOM 8/27/1942, Copenhagen, Denmark Starts:2 Points: 0 Wins:0 Poles:0 Fastest Laps:0 IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE OR INITIATE A DISCUSSION ON THIS DRIVERS' CAREER, CLICK HERE “Smiling” Tom Belso has the distinction of being the first Danish F-1 driver. Having began racing in his native Denmark in the late 60’s, by 1971 Belso had made his way into Formula Atlantic, and by 1972, F-2. It was in Formula F5000, however, that Belso made his mark, becoming one of the top drivers in the category. In the meantime, Belso attracted the attention of Frank Williams, who gave him a few opportunities at the top category. He only practiced in the 1973 Swedish GP, but Williams gave Tom a further 4 opportunities in 1974. In South Africa Tom qualified last and retired. In Spain, Belso failed to qualify, while in Sweden not only did he qualify 21st, out of 28 entries, but ended in 8th place. Has last entry was in the oversubscribed British Grand Prix, when he failed to qualify yet again. Soon William would hire Laffite, who got a stronghold on the Williams number 2 seat and no further drives were offered him. It was good while it lasted. |
