Gianfranco was a promising Italian Formula 3 driver, from the same generation as Riccardo Patrese. However, while Ric went on to enjoy a long and successful Grand Prix career, Branca’s Formula 1 career was as disastrous as one can be. He was involved in the Willi Kauhsen Grand Prix project in 1979. Kauhsen had been a successful entrant/driver in the Interseries in the early 70’s, and also ran, successfully, Alfa Romeos in the World Championship of Makes in 1975. Sadly, he decided to shift into single seaters, where his team never achieved any success. His Formula 2 teams were disastrous, so it was very surprising that Willi decided to enter Formula 1 in 1979. The car did not qualify in its two appearances, in Spain and Belgium, and before things got more embarrassing, Kauhsen closed the team. Branca was then retained by the Merzario team for the Monaco Grand Prix, where he even failed to pre qualify. So Brancatelli ended up the slowest on the track for all of this three appearances, and never again was even considered for Formula 1. He did continue racing for many years, and was very successful racing touring cars and Group C machinery.
