Colombo was a frequent points finisher in Formula 2 races in the mid to late 70’s, every once in a while reaching the podium in third place. He was a steady racer, although not a raw talent at any stretch. So it was with some surprise that ATS hired the Italian to handle one of its machines for two 1978 races, Belgium and Spain. He didn’t post the slowest time in his ATS outings, but was never close to qualifying either. For Italy, Arturo Merzario called Alberto to drive the A1. This entry was even less successful, as Colombo failed to even prequalify. After that, Colombo went back to Formula 2 for a few more years, before retiring for good.
