In fairness, Maria Tereza deserves recognition for being the first woman to start a World Championship event. She was not the first woman driver, or even the first to make it to the highest levels of racing: Elisabetha Junek had been very successful in the 20’s and 30’s. However, in comparison to the top dogs of the day, de Filipis was not all that fast so it is not surprising that she did not achieve much success in F-1. Her first attempt was in the Monaco GP of 1958, where she posted the 22nd fastest time, and did not qualify for the race. However, it is noteworthy that she was ahead of 6 other drivers, including Bernie Ecclestone! She qualified for three other races that year, finishing 10th in Belgium, and retiring the two other times. All these races were done with an ubiquitous Maserati 250 F. She tried Monaco again, in 1959, then driving the Behra-Porsche car. She did well again to end up in front of three other drivers, however, this was not enough to qualify. She disappeared from F-1 henceforth.
