After the 1955 Le Mans accident, Switzerland prohibited circuit racing within its territory. Swiss drivers had the option of going to France, Italy or Germany to pursue a racing career. So it is not surprising that with the exception of Siffert, Reggazoni and Surer, Swiss drivers have not been very successful in Formula 1. Deletraz joints that club. A wealthy man, Deletraz chose France to pursue his racing dream, and at best was a mediocre Formula 3 driver. He did persevere, going on to Formula 3000, where he managed to up his game a bit, with podium finishes. This certainly got him motivated to try Formula 1, and a load of cash bought him a place in the Larrousse team at the 1994 Australian GP. He qualified next to last and retired from the race. In 1995 he waved another chunk of cash at Pacific, doing two races for the team, the Portuguese and European GPs. He managed to qualify for both because by 1995 only 24 cars were entered in Grands Prix. He retired in Portugal, with cramps, and finished too far off at the Nurburgring to be classified. Eventually Deletraz found success in GT racing, where he has won many events in the last ten years.
