It would be a bit unkind to remember journalist/driver Ertl only for his typical moustache, for he was a hard trier in Formula 1, driving second rate machinery. In touring and sports cars Ertl found some success, including a Tourist Trophy win in 1973, and overall German Championship in 1978, which at the time was a very international affair. His first taste in Formula 1 was aboard a Warsteiner sponsored Hesketh, and he actually managed an eighth place in Germany in 1975. He did finish 9th in Monza, after qualifying 17th. For 1976 Ertl was back in the Hesketh team, which was no longer supported by the eponymous well heeled, enthusiastic and rotund Lord. In fact, the team was in constant need of funding, hiring many second drivers besides Ertl. Harald DNQ a few times, but did manage to finish 7th once and 8th twice, so he continued to be near the points zone. His 1977 season was shorter, but still with Hesketh. He appeared in five reasons, failing to qualify at Monaco and Dijon, with a best placing 9th. For 1978 Harald managed to obtain a better car, an Ensign, and he came very close to finishing 6th in Germany. He did fail to qualify three times, twice with the Ensign and once with the career breaking ATS. His final GP was aboard the ATS, in Germany, where he failed to qualify. Two years later he died in an airplane crash.

Cars raced outside of Formula 1:

Formula 2: March, Chevron

Formula Super-Vee

Sports cars: REX, Toyota, Porsche 935, Lotus Europa

Touring cars: BMW, Ford
