HAYJE, BOY Born 5/3/1949, Amsterdam, Holland 3 starts 0 points These days, when there is so much hype about F1 drivers, entry lists are pretty static and most drivers are solidly represented by powerful “impresarios”, it is almost impossible to understand how some drivers managed to race in F-1, in the old days, with barely any background, and sometimes, no money as well! Such is the case of Boy Hayje, a Dutchman who was pretty much an unknown when he raced a Penske PC3 in the Dutch GP of 1976. Having driven a few F5000 races in previous seasons, without much distinction, and stepping down to F-3 for the 1976 season, there was hardly anything on his pedigree that would justify a berth in the world championship. However, Hayje did not really disgrace himself, qualifying 21st, albeit retiring in the race. The next year, he came back for more, entering several GPs through F&S Properties/RAM Racing. The weapon of choice was the less than stellar March 761. Most of the time Hayje did not qualify, retired once and was not classified in Belgium. Thus ended his F-1 career. Eventually Hayje would find some success driving Renault R5s throughout Europe. |
