Hans Heyer was a top touring car/sports car driver in the 70’s, many times winner of the German championship and titleholder of the European Touring car championship in 1974. He rarely raced single seaters, so it was with some surprise that he was called by the German ATS team to race one of its year old Penskes in the 1977 German race. Heyer qualified 27th, so he was out of the picture, being listed as the third reserve. For some unexplained reason, he was allowed to enter the track, until the marshals caught on and disqualified him. He ended up retiring anyway, and was never again seen in the F-1 paddock.
