SOON A FULL F-1 BIOGRAPHY OF: HOBBS, DAVID Starts: 7 Points: 0 Wins: 0 Poles: 0 Fastest Laps: 0 Born Leanington Spa, Warwickshire, England 6/9/1939 Now mostly known as a lively TV commentator in the USA, Hobbs had a long career, although largely undistinguished in Formula 1. He had occasional drives in a surprisingly broad range of machinery in this formula. Diversity was indeed a hallmark of this driver's career as you can see below. His first Formula 1 starts took place in 1967. He drove Bernard White's BRM's in Britain and Canada (finishing 8th and 9th), also driving a works Lola in the F2 section of the German GP, finishing 10th. Hobbs also got a call from Honda to take over one of its cars in the Italian GP of 1968. This turned out to be Hobbs' single retirement in his short F-1 career. Then, in 1971, Hobbs took over Mark Donohue's Penske entered McLaren when Mark opted out of the US Grand prix, to race in USAC. He finished 10th. David's best opportunity came in 1974, when he was called to drive the third, Yardley-sponsored McLaren in Austria and Italy. Although he finished both races, in 7th and 9th, he did not impress anyone greatly, so there was no Formula opportunity for the gregarious Brit. Hobbs won the 1971 U.S. Formula 5000 championship, and has driven an enviable variety of racing cars, in both sides of the Atlantic, including Indy Cars, Formula 5000, large and small engined sports cars and old time Can-Am big bangers.
