One of the first auto racing stars was a Hungarian, Ferenc Sziz, a Renault works driver in the early part of the 20th century. After Sziz, the country failed to produce any other star. Hungary's significance was that it was the first "Iron Curtain" country to stage a Formula 1 Grand Prix, at the time when such a thing existed, back in 1986. The Hungarian race has been a regular feature of the calendar ever since, in spite of the fact it is processional. The country also featured rounds of the European Touring car championship in the 60's and 70s. Here and there, Hungarian drivers have taken part in major racing, but Baumgartner has been so far the only one who made it to Formula 1. Although he has not had much success, to his credit he has scored a point.
