She did well enough in Italian Formula 3 and Formula 5000, to be the first woman to attempt qualifying for a Formula 1 since Maria Teresa de Filipis’s efforts in the late 50’s. She entered the British GP of 1974, in a year old Brabham, but although she did not qualify, she was faster than 6 other men at the race track! This was enough to convince Lavazza to put up the money, and March to provide a car for Lella’s 1975 charge. Unfortunately, teammate Vittorio Brambilla was extremely fast that year, so Lella’s efforts appeared poor by comparison. The fact is that she was the slowest qualifier only in a couple of occasions, and in addition to finishing 6th in the half race at Spain, she finished 7th in the full, grueling GP at the Nurburgring. Lella also drove a March in the Brazilian Grand Prix of 1976, finishing 14th, then took her Lavazza cash to RAM, where she raced the ill prepared Brabhams. She failed to qualify for a couple of races, but did start in Austria and finished 12th. This brought her Formula 1 career to a close, but eventually Lella won a few World Championship of Makes rounds with a 2 Liter Osella, and was a competitive touring car driver as well. She died from cancer in 1992.
