The Australians have a reputation for being tough, and many left their country attempting to make an impression on the international racing scene. McGuire came to Europe accompanying Alan Jones, and while the latter would eventually become a GP winner, and world champion, McGuire would try hard, with no results. So I guess, fielding an old F-1 Williams in the British Shellsport series would be as good as it gets for the tough Australian, and he did it to some effect, actually winning a race with the device in 1976. However, when he tried to enter the car in the 1976 British GP his entry was not accepted. McGuire did not give up: he modified the Williams as much as he could to be entitled to call it a McGuire BM1, and entered the British GP once more in 1977. He had the 35th fastest time out of 36 entries, so he was nowhere near starting the race. But he proved a point. Unfortunately, he would find death driving his own creation a few weeks later, in Brands Hatch.
