Stuppacher was a contemporary of Niki Lauda’s, in fact, he shared a car with him on occasion, but while Niki’s career really took off, Otto was never more than a lower than average sports car driver. That did not prevent him from trying the big time in 1976, having bought a Tyrrel 007 entered by the OASC team. Otto tried to qualify three times, and was unlucky to have left Monza before the race. Hunt, Mass and Watson’s practice times were excluded, and Stuppacher had posted the 26th fastest time and was first reserve. As he left Monza early, he failed to take his rightful place on the grid. Having missed his chance, Otto still tried to qualify at Mosport and Watkins Glen, to no avail. He wisely decided GP racing was not his cup of tea, and continued racing sports cars.
